In my current job I authorise designs for a new nuclear power plant simulator.

A simulator is a giant training room for nuclear power plant operators to practice driving the plant as safely as possible. It also lets engineers test their systems using something called a “model” which represents real-life, physical processes.

So, I have to review designs for the simulator and the model and say if both are OK for use here in the UK.

Almost all of my job is engineering components with a bit of organising and planning of what I am doing. Any “management” decisions I pass onto the group leader which is just great as it means I am more relaxed about life. engineering of components means thinking how to make a thing do what the physics needs it to do, be strong enough and withstand the heat of fusion, and then tell a draftsman about the changesd to the drawings to be done. I’m researching a new way of keeping things cool without using electricity. It means I split my time between finding out what other people are doing in this area, planning what experiments I want to do, designing equipment to do the experiments in, analysing the results, and making a model of a real system.
