What do you do on a wet afternoon for choice? Fix an old clock, mend the hoover for mum, help dad fix the car in the garage, read about cars, spend time on the computer programming, then you probably have an interest in things mechanical and engineering would be fun for you as a career. I would recommend trying to get work experience with a manufacturing company, and it is not really important what they make, but just that thay make a thing that is sold, rather than just an accountancy firm that jsut supplies a service. This should give you an idea if you want to do engineering as a career – and i recommend it if you are considering it! Regards Robin

Definitely get work experience as Robin suggests. I did 2 work experience placements with different companies and it helped me decide what sort of engineer I wanted to be (mechanical). However I would say don’t worry too much if you don’t spend a lot of time fixing things – I never did, but I did always enjoyed assembling new furniture and it is important to be able to picture in your head how things fit together and work. But work experience is very useful to help you decide on any career.
