First I think you need an aptitude to things mechanical, and then with a reasonable amount of work, which is fun if you enjoy it, you can become more senior. I was a Director of Engineering in a small company and found the multitude of things I had to do spoilt the fun. So I applied for a lowly staff engineering job with CCFE and love it. (called down-sizing one’s job) and am more than happy now. It gives me a chance to do this sort of competition. Regards Robin.
It is hard work to get to the top of any career, but enjoying it definitely gives you the motivation to work hard. For engineers it can be difficult to stay on the technical engineering side of a business without becoming a manager, but a lot of companies now recognise that some people don’t want to become managers and offer support for becoming technical experts in their area.
